The history of WhatsApp began when two former Yahoo employees, Brian Acton and Jan Koum, set out in 2009 to create a messaging app that was different from the rest. 

Ideally, it would allow users to communicate with each other without the need for traditional SMS messaging. The app was designed to be simple, fast, and reliable.

WhatsApp was initially envisioned as a status update tool, where users could let their contacts know what they were up to – hence the wordplay with the term “What’s Up?”.

However, with the rise of smartphone usage and the potential they saw in app-based messaging, the duo quickly pivoted to focus on creating a messaging platform.

The creation of WhatsApp 2.0

Recognizing a growing desire for real-time communication, Brian Acton and Jan Koum decided to shift gears and reshape their original idea.

Enter WhatsApp 2.0, the game-changer. Initially launched in a beta version, it was a test run for the new messaging capability.

Users could now directly message contacts, bridging the gap between simple status updates and interactive communication.

The app began to gain momentum, attracting the attention of venture capitalists due to its unique approach to messaging and growing user base.

It was during this time that they secured seed funding from a range of investors, the most notable being $250,000 from five ex-Yahoo! friends who were granted co-founder status.

This injection of capital provided the necessary resources to upgrade the app, significantly impacting its growth trajectory and playing a crucial role in its future expansion.

Transcending the Beta Phase: the initial release

In November 2009, when WhatsApp was officially introduced to the public after its beta stage, it was initially available exclusively for iPhone users via the App Store. 

The exclusivity to iOS did not last long, marking a significant milestone in the history of WhatsApp. BlackBerry saw WhatsApp’s arrival in 2010, followed by Symbian, and then Android.

By making the app available across various platforms, WhatsApp showcased a dedication to creating universally accessible communication tools, embracing a wide user base.

WhatsApp as a paid app

For a significant period of its early history, WhatsApp was not a free app. After the first year of free use, the company employed an annual subscription fee of $0.99.

The aim was to keep the platform ad-free, offering users an unintrusive messaging experience, while the nominal fee acted as a monetization strategy for the app.

During that time, WhatsApp introduced a new feature that allowed its users to share photos within the application, which attracted a substantial number of new users.

Funding by Sequoia

In the foundational chapters of the history of WhatsApp, the venture capital firm Sequoia Capital played a crucial role in launching the messaging app into the global limelight.

In 2011, when WhatsApp was growing its user base, Sequoia Capital saw its potential and decided to invest in the platform.

Injecting an initial investment of approximately $8 million for more than 15% of the company, Sequoia became the number one supporter of WhatsApp’s journey.

This collaboration expanded even further when, in 2013, Sequoia invested another $50 million, skyrocketing the company’s value to $1.5 billion. 

It was during this time that WhatsApp changed its paid model to a subscription alternative, where users could use the app for free for a year, and only then pay the $1 fee.

Facebook Acquisition

In a move that sent ripples throughout the global tech industry, Facebook Inc. acquired WhatsApp in February 2014, reshaping the trajectories of both entities dramatically.

The deal, valued at a staggering $19 billion, stands as one of the largest in the history of technology mergers and acquisitions.

Prior to the acquisition, WhatsApp had rapidly turned into a messaging titan, boasting over 600 million active users, and processing 50 billion messages per day.

The draw for Facebook was not just about WhatsApp’s user base, but also in its potential to bolster Facebook’s own messaging capabilities and expand its global user network.

The acquisition was meant to work as a step towards solidifying Facebook’s dominance, and as a vehicle to connect even more people around the world.

It was then that the app completely adopted a free-for-all methodology, offering its services globally without the subscription costs.

In the wake of the acquisition, the promise of keeping WhatsApp’s independence and attachment to privacy was tested.

Changes in data-sharing policies and eventual integration with Facebook’s advertising machine instilled global debates around data privacy and user consent.

WhatsApp for Business

Businesses found a cozy home in WhatsApp in January of 2017 with the introduction and enhancement of WhatsApp Business.

Users can create and communicate using stickers, perform audio and video calls, record video messages, post stories in their statuses, and much more.

WhatsApp Pay: simplifying transactions

Easing into the domain of financial transactions, WhatsApp Pay marked its presence, allowing users to effortlessly send money through the app.

This feature is able to simplify money transfers within a few taps and has eased the way users manage their finances, making splitting that dinner bill a walk in the park.

In a time where data security is crucial, WhatsApp has remained consistent in its commitment to user privacy.

With end-to-end encryption in place, personal and business conversations are securely transmitted, ensuring that the intended eyes and ears are the sole recipients.
